In the latest of its consumer surveys, the premium seed bank Premium Cultivars has dug into the ethereal zone of cannabis-pet overlap: the mysterious intersectional gulf between pet ownership and cannabis use. Conducted in July 2024, the survey of nearly 1,000 customers asked a small range of questions about how cannabis affects the human-animal connection, delivering data from an understudied phenomenon.
Key Findings: Cannabis and Pets as Relaxation Partners
The survey revealed a number of intriguing connections between cannabis use and pet parenthood. One of the more salient findings was that both petting an animal and consuming cannabis were equally relaxing (cannabis edging out by a margin of just four percent). This implies that both activities induce meaningful relaxation and self-care among pet owners and cannabis lovers.
Other key findings from Premium Cultivars’ survey include:
• Pet Destruction of Cannabis Plants: An impressive 81 percent of respondents reported that their pets had not bothered their cannabis plants, suggesting that owning pets is seldom an issue for home gardening.
• More Cuddly While High: 59 percent of users stated that they could tell their pets enjoyed being cuddled more when they had been smoking cannabis, suggesting a correlation between cannabis use and more pet cuddles.
• Naptime Buddies: Eighty-two percent reported that their pets joined them for a nap after eating cannabis, illustrating the same relaxation and bonding dynamics between pets and owners.
• Can Pets Tell When You’ve Been Smoking?: When questioned about whether or not their pet had noticed them when they were high, respondents were evenly split, showing the ability of animals to sense changes in the minds of their owners to be – not surprisingly – as fuzzy an issue as the implications of “pre-legalization”.
