When Tiki, a 4-year-old Labrador-American bulldog mix with a taste for ‘munchies’, helped herself to about 100mg of THC from her owner’s stash of gummies, the canine’s fondness for edible cannabis found its limit.
Watch the clip below:
Molly Brinkmann, a vet in Franklin, Tennessee, documented Tiki’s love-fest – her ‘best stoned day ever’ – in a TikTok that’s since garnered more than 1.8 million views. ‘She was pretty blazed by the time she showed up,’ Dr Brinkmann told Newsweek with a laugh. It turns out, Tiki had pilfered as many as 10 gummies, each with a 10mg dose of THC. But don’t let Tiki’s tale freak you out; she lived to tell the tale. ‘We were able to induce her to vomit within 90 minutes, so she only absorbed some of the THC. She definitely felt it, but it wasn’t too bad.
Cases like Tiki’s seem to be increasing, according to Dr Brinkmann. ‘We probably see about one THC case a month in our practice, and our local emergency clinics probably get even more,’ she said. In the past six years, the Pet Poison Helpline has had a 448 percent increase in marijuana-related cases.
For dogs, THC can cause seizures, heart problems or even coma, so Tiki’s owners were taking quite a risk. But the pup was just fine after her treatment, and her owners evidently took away a new, and important, lesson about keeping an eye on the stash.
In the comments section of the viral clip, the LOLs kept coming, as an assortment of people shared their own ‘high’ pets. ‘My cocker spaniel once ate a bit of a pot cookie – he was NOT a fun high – he kept snapping at me!’ wrote one, Dianne. ‘My husky got into some gummies a few years ago – I thought he was dying!’ commented Shelbz. ‘Shouldn’t be laughing this hard, omg!’ said Deanne.
Dr Brinkmann pointed to a more serious danger: if the gummies had contained xylitol – a sugar toxic to dogs – the situation could have been much worse. Fortunately, they did not, but she reminded pet parents to keep all drugs and medication out of paws’ reach
