The Unexpected Incident
A Wisconsin restaurant found itself in a “highly” unexpected situation after it served THC-laced pizza to unsuspecting customers. From October 22 to 24, Famous Yeti’s Pizza in Stoughton dished out pies that gave more than just a cheesy delight—thanks to a secret ingredient that no one ordered: THC, the psychoactive component of cannabis.
Public Health Madison & Dane County dropped this bombshell in an October 24 news release, confirming that the pizza dough had been contaminated with THC. The source of the surprise buzz? Apparently, the oil used to make the dough had a little something extra, turning a regular pizza night into an unintended edible experience.
Health Concerns and Apology
It all came to light when local paramedics noticed a pattern—several people who had recently dined at Famous Yeti’s reported similar symptoms. But these weren’t your average food poisoning complaints. According to Cale Ryan, co-owner of the restaurant, “They get really stoned.” He summed it up well: “It’s basically eating an edible, but without knowing.” Not exactly the surprise you’d want while settling in for a relaxing movie night.
Health officials mentioned that consuming THC without knowing it could lead to dizziness, sleepiness, increased heart rate, and even a dash of anxiety or paranoia—depending on how much was consumed. Imagine expecting a gooey slice of pizza heaven, and instead, you’re left feeling like you’ve gone through a scene from “Alice in Wonderland.”
The restaurant was quick to apologize and urged anyone still holding onto leftovers to throw them away. “If you ate the pizza and are experiencing THC-related symptoms, please contact your health care provider or call 911 if your symptoms worsen,” advised Bonnie Armstrong, Director of Environmental Health.
How Did This Happen?
So, how did this happen? Well, the co-owner explained it was all a simple mix-up. “It’s not normal to do, but you borrow a cup of sugar from a neighbor,” Ryan told the Wisconsin State Journal. “We went over to borrow some oil and grabbed the wrong one.” A classic case of wrong place, wrong oil. Talk about borrowing trouble!
The restaurant has since disposed of all the impacted products and is making sure this mix-up doesn’t happen again. In case you’re curious, yes, Delta 9 is legal in Wisconsin, but recreational and medicinal marijuana is not. So while the oil was technically legal, adding it to pizza wasn’t exactly on the menu—or within the law.
Stoughton, just southeast of Madison, is still recovering from what’s likely to be remembered as the “Great THC Pizza Incident.” Famous Yeti’s Pizza is hoping to move past this, get back to basics, and keep its pizzas strictly cheesy from here on out—no “extra toppings” included.
